Outlook 2010

Author: Admin Tech4.us

First off:  Office 2010 Works FAST, way better than the beta, or 2007; quicker opening screens and quick on click repsonse….  way spicier , even on a 5 year notebook.

BUT:  where is the PST file compact?  Found it, and Here it is:

Microsoft Office Outlook 2010

  1. Click the File tab on the Ribbon, and then click the Info tab on the menu.
  2. Click the Accounts Settings tab, and then click on Accounts Settings again
  3. Click the Data Files tab.
  4. Click to select your Personal folder, and then click Settings.
  5. On the General tab, click Compact Now.
  6. Click OK, and then click Close.

FIX to Remove MyWebSearch in Firefox

Author: Admin Tech4.us

OK, Do you get the MyWebSearch if Firefox that just will not go away.  After removing the toolbar in IE, and Add/Remove Programs for anything related to MyWebSearch or Global Web Search, and running spybot and malwarebytes, it still came up in firefox.  Test would be to type forecastfox in the top URL, and it should take you directly to the ADDin.  But still redirected to MYWEBSEARCH.

-The FIX:  Open Firefox and
-type ABOUT:CONFIG in the top URL line
-Agree to the warning, that it might void your warranty and click on I’ll Be Careful, I promise button
-Press on CTRL-F, hold CTRL key down and press F to FIND or FILTER yoru search
-type in the Filter Box, MYWEB (capital letters do not matter)
-On my clients infected comptuer, I found FIVE references, so I Right Click on each of the items and on that menu, I clicked on RESET.
-After all five are RESET to default values, I Restarted FIREFOX (3.6) and the MyWebSearch REDIRECTS are gone.

Test again:  Type ForeCastFox in the URL top search line, straight to the addon, which I do recommend.  YEAH!  Hope this helps anyone.

Windows Update RED, will not update: FIX

This one took a while to fix… but on a Vista, and Windows 7 computers, I found that Windows Update will not work, listing:

Windows cannot install updates because Update Services is not running, you may need to restart your computer.

Then, for more informoation on NULL, click here.  AFTER LOTS OF REVIEW, I got it to work, from WAY down on a MS Engineer post, this WORKS:

  1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
    2. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop.
    3. Minimize the Services snap-in.
  2. Rename the SoftwareDistribution directory. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. Type cd %windir%, and then press ENTER.
    3. Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press ENTER
    4. Type exit, and then press ENTER .

Note When you remove the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder, the history list is erased from the “Review your Updates” section of the Windows Update Web site. This action will not affect the currently installed updates on your computer. Subsequent updates will appear in the history list.

  1. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Maximize the Services snap-in.
    2. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start.
    3. Close the Services snap-in window.
  2. Visit the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or the WSUS server again, and then download an update.
  3. If you still receive the same errors, verify that you have correctly performed steps 1 through 3.

Updated a windows XP … one that I never setup since 95 and now there are problems.  Besides the normal cleanup/update of 2-4 hours, I ran the free AVG antivirus and found NPROTECT, which I now is old Norton, or Symantec residue, but now mention anywhere else.

Anyhow, looking up took long enough that I will post the fix here.  if you scan for virus’s and see multiple warnings, then the fix is:

Start, RUN, CMD, for command Prompt… or whatever your fav way to open the Dos command screen, then type exaclty as below

rd /S “\\?\C:\recycler\nprotect”
and it will ask to verify Are you Sure: Yes / No… click on Y for Yes, takes a few moments… but Vwalaaa… Gone.  Another one Bites the Fix!

Are you getting the fun and lovely Error 25099 or Windows Installer Can’t be Access or can’t  load due to compression in file when you try to install Java updates?

Download the whole Java Install file (Version 16 is available) and during install, place a checkmark in the CHANGE DESTINATION FOLDER, and make a new JavaXX or any different folder name.  Install will complete in a couple of minutes SUCCESSFULLY.

Also, I recommend that you remove ANY reference to Java in Add Remove Programs, or Programs and Features (Vista) EXCEPT for the latest version.

NOTE:  version 15 is the update I am getting with Control Panel, Java Updates, or you can go to the download center at Java.com and get v16

After running several utilities that clean the registry (coming soon) i noticed that although my computer was running faster, a registry cleanup tool disabled my network, power and power systray icons:  Here is the quick fix:

Rededit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

and replace Local_Machine with Local_User

delete all HIDE keys, if they are there…

In writing my notes I see that a detailed How To is here:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fix-for-when-clock-volume-power-or-network-icons-are-missing-and-grayed-out-in-windows-vista/

which also states the location to download the Registry FIX, unzip, double click, Log Off, and back on … then Right Click on your Notification SysTray area , not on an Icon, but in the blank area, and re-check mark all that you want visible…)  Kudo’s to the weblink above for reducing my notes, and making available the reg download to fix.
